Arkansas Elementary School is 1-of-7 in U.S. to Receive $5,000 Federal Technology Grant TDS? Sponsors Program; Presents Check to Teachers, Administrators Today

KINGSLAND, AR (PRWEB) January 13, 2012

At an all-school assembly earlier today, Kingsland Elementary School received a $ 5,000 technology grant from the Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED). TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS?), a supporting member of FRED, presented the grant to Bonnie Rogers, coordinator of the Parent/School/Community Center; Rebecca McGee, science teacher for grades 4-6; and school administrators. TDS also surprised the school with five Dell Netbooks.

Kingsland applied for and is one of only seven schools in the United States receiving a FRED technology grant. This grant makes it possible for the school to offer its students (of which 4-out-of-5 are eligible for the federal free/reduced meal program) more technology-based learning opportunities.

Our kids are very excited about science, says McGee. They spend a considerable part of the school day on the Internet researching scientific information and careers in the science field. This money will help us invest in new tools that will allow the students to engage in more meaningful and impacting scientific investigations.

The school is planning to use the funds to purchase tools for earth, physical, and life science projects. For example, in physical science, students will use motion detector probes to record movement, speed, energy, and direction changes for comparison through computer graphing. In Nature of Science, students will collect accurate weight readings using digital scales and compare their findings to readings from spring scales, balance pans, and triple beams.

TDS is proud to be part of the FRED program, Its a great honor to present this check to Kingsland Elementary School, especially knowing that it will help the students have the opportunity to use truly innovative technology, says Tony Bugher, market manager for TDS.

The FRED grant program, now in its tenth year, awards funds to public schools that are working in cooperation with their local telecommunications companies to increase the use of technology to enhance the learning experience.
